Model-Agnostic vs. Single-Model Coding Tools#

Cursor lets you pick from Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok, and its own Composer. Claude Code runs Claude. The standard reading is that Cursor’s approach is strictly better because choice beats no choice. I think that reading is wrong, or at least measuring the wrong thing.

The model menu gets the attention. The coupling between the harness and the model is what actually moves quality. Once you look at the coupling, model-agnostic and single-model stop being better-and-worse and become two bets on different constraints.

The Usual Framing#

The argument for model-agnostic tools is easy to state and mostly true:

  • You can use the best model for each task – a frontier model for hard reasoning, a cheap one for autocomplete.
  • You are not locked to one vendor’s pricing or roadmap.
  • If one provider has an outage or restricts access, you route around it.

All real benefits. The mistake is treating them as the whole picture and concluding that a single-model tool is just a model-agnostic tool with the options removed.

What the Model Menu Hides#

A coding tool is two things: the model, and the harness around it – the system prompt, the tool definitions, the context-management strategy, the way thinking is invoked, the format the model is expected to produce. The harness is where most of the day-to-day quality lives.

A single-model tool can tune that harness to one model’s exact behavior. Claude Code is built by the company that builds Claude, against Claude’s tool-use format, thinking budget, and context window. The harness assumes one model and exploits it.

A model-agnostic tool has to abstract the model behind a common interface so that swapping Gemini for Claude doesn’t break the product. That abstraction is the cost nobody puts on the comparison sheet. A prompt tuned for Claude’s behavior is not the prompt that gets the most out of Gemini, and a harness that has to work with both will tend toward the behavior they share rather than the ceiling of either. Optionality and per-model depth pull against each other.

This is visible in practice: a prompt that works well on one model in an agnostic tool often degrades when you switch models, because the surrounding harness was not rebuilt for the new model. The menu changed; the tuning did not.

One exception matters, because it cuts against the obvious read. The penalty falls on the third-party models routed through the generic interface. A model the tool builds itself is different: the vendor controls both halves and can co-design them as tightly as any single-model tool does. Cursor’s Composer is the clearest case. It is the most tightly coupled model in Cursor’s lineup, the one place Cursor escapes its own abstraction tax. An agnostic tool runs a shallow harness for the models it rents and a deep one for the model it owns.

Who Agnosticism Actually Serves#

Optionality is sold as a user benefit. Its largest beneficiary is the tool vendor.

For the company building the tool, multiple providers mean margin control (route cheap work to a cheap model), negotiating leverage (no single provider is load-bearing), and insulation from being cut off. Those are business advantages, and they are the reason every serious agnostic tool is converging on the same move: build your own model. Cursor shipped Composer to stop being a pure reseller of someone else’s API.

The user’s share of the benefit is narrower and more specific than “better results.” It is mostly resilience: when a provider throttles, raises prices, or restricts access, your tool keeps working. That is worth real money. It is not the same thing as higher answer quality, and the marketing tends to blur the two.

Who Single-Model Serves#

A single-model tool serves the user who wants the ceiling on one model and is willing to accept the vendor relationship that comes with it. You are tied to one company’s pricing and release cadence. In exchange, the harness is co-designed with the model, and improvements to the model show up in the tool without an abstraction layer flattening them.

It also serves the model maker, who has an obvious incentive to build the best possible harness for showing off its own model. That alignment is a feature for the user as long as that model is the one you want to be on.

The Supply-Risk Reality#

The strongest case for agnosticism is not quality. It is what happens when the provider relationship goes wrong, and 2025-2026 supplied the examples.

In June 2025, Anthropic reportedly cut most of Windsurf’s first-party Claude capacity with little notice, after reports that OpenAI was acquiring Windsurf. Windsurf had to strip Claude access for free users and pivot to bring-your-own-key. In January 2026, Anthropic enforced the clause in its commercial terms that prohibits using Claude to build competing products; this was reported to have blocked a rival lab’s staff from reaching Claude through Cursor.

A tool whose only model is a model it does not control is exposed to decisions it does not make. That is the real argument for keeping more than one model wired up, and for building your own. It is an insurance argument, not a quality argument, and it is strong on its own terms.

Notice these are different questions. “Which produces better code on a hard task today” and “which survives a provider cutting you off” do not have the same answer, and most comparisons pretend they do.

Where This Goes#

The two camps are bleeding into each other. Agnostic tools are building their own models to escape supply risk; model makers ship their own harnesses to show their models at full strength. The end state is not one approach winning. It is most serious tools running a primary model they control deeply, with secondary models wired up as a hedge.

If you are choosing a tool, stop scoring it on the length of the model list. Ask how well the harness is tuned to the model you will actually use, and how exposed you are to the business relationship between the tool and whoever makes that model. Those two questions predict your experience better than the size of the menu.
